Terrorists destroy the World Trade Center
It happened on September 11 2001 – 9/11, as Americans and others say. At just after 9 a.m. a passenger plane crashed into one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, and most of us thought it was a terrible accident. When a second jet hit the other tower a few minutes later, it was clear that these were acts of terrorism. It was not long before we heard that a third aircraft had hit the Pentagon and that a fourth had crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, failing to reach its target in Washington DC.

All the planes had been hijacked by members of Al-Qaeda and used as weapons in suicide attacks. All the 19 hijackers died in the attacks, as did 2,974 innocent people from a total of 90 countries. The material damage, of course, was enormous, and the American economy suffered huge losses.
The USA and its allies immediately started the “War on Terror” and invaded Afghanistan, where the hijackers had been trained. As far as the material damage is concerned, the Pentagon has already been repaired, but it is still not certain if and when the towers of the World Trade Center will be replaced.
