Listening: A famous Irishman

Listen to a text about Bono, the lead singer of the famous Irish band U2. Then do the activities below.


1          Understanding the text
Put these fragments together and make complete sentences.

Bono’s real name is the Nobel Peace Prize. 
U2’s members are all  Irish.
He has met  Paul Hewson.
Bono has been nominated for a conflict going in Northern Ireland for centuries.
Bono decided to help the poor the Pope.
In Bullet Blue Sky U2 attack when a poor man asked him to adopt his son.
Sunday Bloody Sunday is a song about the conflict in Northern Ireland.

2          Talking
Work in groups of three or four, and discuss the following questions:

a) Do we in the western world want to help those who are suffering in Africa?
b) Is it right that people in countries like Norway have so much while millions in the third world have next to nothing?
c) What should our politicians and organizations like the United Nations do to help?
d) What can countries in the third world do to help themselves?
e) What can young adults like yourselves do to help the poor, the sick and the hungry?

f) Here is one of Bono’s statements. Based on what he says here, would you call him an optimist or a pessimist? Do you share his views?

“We’re the first generation that can look at poverty and disease, look across the ocean to Africa and say . . . we can be the first to end this sort of stupid extreme poverty, where in the world of plenty, a child can die for lack of food in its belly. We can be the first generation. It might take a while, but we can be that generation that says no to stupid poverty. . . . For the first time in history we have the know-how, we have the cash, we have the lifesaving drugs, but do we have the will?”
